Confirm who can approve layout changes and who will coordinate access on the day.
Choose a Practical Working Window

An out-of-hours booking does not automatically mean the area will be ready at the next opening time. The agreed programme must include preparation, application, cooling or curing and final checks. Weather or unexpected surface problems can also affect external work.
Agree Closures and Phased Working
Larger car parks and commercial sites may be suitable for phased working, with one section closed while another remains available. Confirm the sequence, temporary routes and delivery arrangements in advance. A narrow entrance or shared access road may require a full closure for part of the work.
Keep people and vehicles away from the working area using suitable controls agreed for the site. HSE guidance on separating pedestrians and vehicles explains the importance of route separation and clearly identified crossing points. Temporary arrangements should be included in the site planning.
Allow Time for Surface Preparation
Parked vehicles, stored materials and other obstructions need to be removed before the agreed start. Confirm responsibility for cleaning and preparation, and identify old markings that conflict with the new layout. Surface repairs, contamination or unsuitable conditions may need attention before application can proceed.
Confirm Drying and Reopening Requirements
Reopening times depend on the marking product, surface and application conditions. Hot-applied thermoplastic needs to cool; paint and resin systems have product-specific drying or curing requirements. A surface that feels dry may not yet be ready for vehicle traffic.
Agree the required time before pedestrian access, light traffic or normal operations resumes, using the selected product’s instructions and the contractor’s assessment. Keep the area protected until the agreed checks and handover are complete. Avoid promising one standard drying time for every marking system.
Tell Staff, Visitors and Delivery Drivers
Give notice of affected areas and temporary parking or access routes. Nominate a site contact who can resolve access problems, coordinate other contractors and communicate any programme changes. Make sure the arrangements remain in place throughout the work and until the area is released.
